Spaghetti and Wine - The most classic food and wine pairing ever! 🍝
One of the most traditional Italian cuisines is spaghetti and the most traditional sauces to be served with spaghetti are tomato or Bolognese sauces, both of which are tomato-based. Bolognese is a thick meaty tomato sauce and tomato is a thinner tomato sauce with herbs and spices.
It's all about the sauce!
The sauce is the most important consideration when choosing a wine to pair with spaghetti or pasta. Tomato-based sauces pair best with red wines that are medium-to-high in acidity and tannins.
Here are my recommendations
🍷Lighter tomato-sauced spaghetti - Pinot Noir, Barbera, Dolcetto, or Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
🍷 Meaty and rich Bolognese-sauced spaghetti - Barolo, Primitivo (Zinfandel), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Chianti Classico (Sangiovese).
🥂If you prefer a white wine with your tomato-based spaghetti, consider a Pinot Grigio/Gris, Grechetto or Friulano or any other light, dry white wine – avoid fruity or sweet white wines.
If you go with a lighter Bolognese-sauced spaghetti or a simple tomato, consider a medium to full-bodied rosé, nicely chilled.
