New York Sour🍹



To celebrate World Whiskey Day, here is the recipe for one of the very oldest cocktail creations called a New York Sour. A New York Sour is a tasty blend of whiskey and wine with a sophisticated, balanced and smoky-sweet deliciousness. Its roots go back to the mid-1800s in Chicago where it was originally named the Continental Sour. It later became a New York Sour in the late 1800s when it was being mixed by a New York bartender and continues to be enjoyed to this day.

Recipe

2 ounces of whiskey (Bourbon, Scotch, Irish, Rye, Canadian, Kentucky)
2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon simple syrup (options for simple syrup are maple syrup, agave syrup, and honey)
2 tablespoons of fruity red wine (Zinfandel, Shiraz, Malbec, etc)
Optional: Egg white
Optional garnish: Lemon zest or slice

Directions

Pour whiskey, lemon juice, and simple syrup (or sweetener) into a cocktail shaker and fill it with ice. Shake for 20 seconds and strain into a Highball glass. Insert a spoon just under the drink’s surface and slowly pour the red wine over the back of the spoon, layering it so the wine floats on the drink's surface. Add optional lemon zest or slice to the glass.

For a creamy consistency, add an egg white to the cocktail shaker with the other ingredients and shake together.
