Amarone della Valpolicella Allegrini

If Valpolicella is recognized today as a hot spot for excellent Venetian wine, it is undoubtedly thanks to heavyweights and pioneers such as Allegrini. Introducing innovative techniques and practices, this estate successfully fuses traditional and modern style.

The most awarded wine of its kind, the Allegrini family’s DOCG Amarone della Valpolicella Classico consistently ranks among the most esteemed red wines in Italy. Drawing on more than six generations of Veneto winegrowing tradition and an unwavering focus on quality, the family received its 30th Tre Bicchieri (“Three Glasses”) award from Gambero Rosso in 2014, placing it among the top producers in Italy. Individually, Allegrini Amarone has received 16 Tre Bicchieri designations, more than any other Amarone.

Marrying perfection of the ancient appassimento process instrumental in Amarone winegrowing with the development of some of the Veneto’s preeminent vineyard sites, the family upholds a lasting legacy of excellence while continuing to innovate.

CEO Marilisa Allegrini carries on the legacy of her father Giovanni, the patriarch of the modern estate and an innovator in appassimento winegrowing in the region. President of Amarone Families (Famiglie dell’Amarone d’Arte), Marilisa is deeply committed to furthering the renown of Amarone and the Veneto worldwide, annually traveling to dozens of countries to share Allegrini wines.

At home, Marilisa is a gracious host who cultivates a unique and elegant atmosphere at the Allegrini family’s spectacular Villa della Torre, a 16th century renaissance palace offering exclusive events and cuisine, and cooking experiences from a Michelin-starred chef.

Allegrini modernized appassimento winemaking by numerous measures, notably reducing bitterness and emphasizing desirable phenolic flavor compounds by adding dried fruit to previously vinified, fresh wine in lieu of passing fresh wine over grape pomace, which was traditionally done for Amarone. The family has also drawn renewed international prestige to local Amarone grape varieties such as Corvina Veronese, which they cultivate at their celebrated monovarietal vineyard, La Poja.

Here, and at their six other Veneto vineyards, the Allegrinis pair modern techniques such as site selection by soil type, high density planting and guyot trellising to develop wines which demonstrate the incredible potential of a renewed approach to this historic region.

Founded in 2002 on the same premise of exploring extraordinary single vineyard sites, the Allegrini family’s Poggio al Tesoro estate in Bolgheri represents their newest frontier, as well as a renewed opportunity to continue their exploration of what’s possible in Italian wine.
