The Big Mac
Did you know?
The Big Mac was created by an Italian American. Franchise owner Jim Delligatti of Pittsburgh was the creator of this kind of hamburger. He created it in 1967, at one of the locations that he controlled in Pennsylvania. Within two years, it became a very popular product. An Army veteran, Delligatti was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, worked odd jobs until he hitchhiked to California, where he worked at some restaurants until working at the original McDonald's in 1954, owned by an Irish American couple named Richard and Maurice McDonald. Delligatti opened the first McDonald’s on the East Coast, in the western portion of Pennsylvania in 1957, after speaking with the McDonalds about the fact that he was interested in opening a franchise. He went on to open 47 more locations in the following 25 years, competing for business with the Big Boy and Burger King chains. He passed away in 2016, at the age of 98. A family member of his said that Delligatti ate one Big Mac each week until 2005. Keep in mind, it was better for your health than it is now. 🇮🇹
Jim Delligatti (born August 2, 1918-died November 29, 2016) is credited by McDonald's for developing the Big Mac sandwich in 1967, as well as the Egg McMuffin breakfast sandwich two years later, in 1970, both of which were originally sold in his Pittsburgh, PA area restaurants.
