Karl Extra Brut Trentodoc Terre del Lagorai wine
Perhaps not everyone knows that... Thus began a column of the puzzle week that tickled the public with curious and interesting news. We have borrowed it to tell you about today's company and its name. LANDS OF THE LAGORAI. The Lagorai represents the largest mountain range in Eastern Trentino: it embraces the Valsugana, a part of the Val di Fiemme, the Val di Cembra to the west, the Valle di Primiero to the east, until it enters the territory of the Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino Natural Park to the north. It is precisely in this small "Tibet", that this company works constantly with respect for tradition and nature, where the desire of the members is to bring to Valsugana – the place where the company is based – a new economic competitiveness, always respectful of resources and people. Their Trentodoc reflect the philosophy of this winery, committed to quality. And today we present Karl Extra Brut, 100% Chardonnay and 24 months of permanence on the lees. An enveloping and refined mountain bubble, fresh, with a fruity note.
Since ancient times, the vine was propagated in an elementary way and did not require special treatments: winter pruning and good fertilization were more than enough. What changed the situation in the nineteenth century was the arrival of three parasites from the New Continent, specifically Powdery mildew, Phylloxera and downy mildew. Their appearance is attributed to the reduction in navigation times made possible by the steamboat, which favored the survival on board of the pathogenic entities that in America had lived peacefully with the vine for thousands of years. The subsequent importation of American grapes Isabella and disease-resistant Strawberry, aimed at counteracting the nascent viticultural crisis, only worsened the situation. Within 20 years, the area affected by phylloxera reached 1 million hectares, equal to a quarter of the total Italian vineyard area: many farmers abandoned the countryside to emigrate to the city or continue the viticultural profession in America and Australia.Il phylloxera problem then found a solution by grafting the European vine varieties onto American vine rootstocks, resistant to root forms of the disease. The so-called "Bordeaux mixture" was also born in the last twenty years of the nineteenth century and, in the following years, chemically synthesized phytosanitary products.
An alternative and ecological path opened at the beginning of the twentieth century is that of PIWI vines, also called super-bio, which arise from complex interspecific and intraspecific crossing planes aimed at obtaining an intrinsic character of resistance of the plant to the main cryptogams. We proceed by cutting the anthers (sacs containing male pollen) of the mother plant, in the flowering phase, and then brushing the pollen of the plant chosen for crossing on the female part; In this way, the fruits are obtained from which the seeds of the new vine will be taken and planted, which will require a further 25-30 years of testing before it can be distributed to winegrowers. In optimal conditions, with rainfall of less than 1000mm per year, these resistant vines do not need any treatment; In any case, the use of pesticides is reduced to a maximum of three biological treatments with copper or sulphur. The quality of the wines produced today with this program is fully comparable with other European varieties, but the economic and environmental benefits are unparalleled. However, regulatory difficulties remain (European legislation does not allow the use of resistant varieties in the production of wines with the D.O. designation and many regions have not yet authorized their cultivation) and compositional challenges (the contents of diglucosidic anthocyanins not compatible with European legislation for red and white grape varieties, acidity control in hot central-southern environments). Currently, the cultivation of resistant vines is suitable in Trentino Alto Adige, Lombardy, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto, regions in which some varieties have been registered in the regional register. A result that underlines not only the excellence of the individual Trentodocs, but also the ability of the Trentino sparkling wine house to best express the potential of the territory by declining them in a wide range of labels, each with its own identity, but consistent in style.
