How many coffees a day can you drink?

Coffee, benefits
Before answering the question, let's take a step back and try to understand what are the benefits that coffee brings to our body. According to research conducted by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee, the consumption of this beverage could reduce the chance of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus by 25%, as well as reduce the risk of contracting Alzheimer's disease by 27%. A further study by the Institute for Immunity, Transplantion and Infection reports that coffee would be able to block the functioning of a protein that triggers certain inflammatory processes. Research published in the journal Geriatrics, Gerentology International has highlighted the hypothesis that caffeine protects against the onset of Parkinson's disease, while a study by the Harvard School of Public Health has shown how the intake of 2 and up to 4 coffees daily stimulates the production of serotonin and dopamine, becoming a sort of natural antidepressant.

If you're a coffee addict, you should definitely read this article. It's important to know how many coffees a day you can drink before they become too much. How many coffees a day can you drink? This question happens to be asked at the end of the day, perhaps if it was one of those particularly heavy days. Despite being one of the most consumed and loved beverages, not only in Italy, coffee is only good for you if you do not exaggerate in the quantities * otherwise the benefits in terms of mental clarity, concentration and energy vanish and increase discomfort and health risks. As they say, it's the dose that makes the poison. I talked about it with the expert biologist nutritionist Maria Rosaria Baldi, who explained the pros and cons.

How many coffees a day can you drink without side effects?
The benefits of coffee are many and should not be wasted by exaggerating. After all, in addition to being a consolidated habit, especially in Italy it has a traditional value and is also a convivial gesture. How many times have you invited someone over for coffee as an excuse to have a chat? It is often the gesture of spontaneous welcome that comes naturally to us to those who enter not only our home, but perhaps also the office or elsewhere. Certainly, it is a fixed appointment (or almost) at the end of the meal. How much coffee a day can be drunk without side effects can be summed up in an amount of about 300 milligrams, according to research in recent decades: "they do not produce any negative effects on the healthy individual, also due to its important antioxidant power." Basically, we are talking about 4 or 5 cups of espresso, 3 or 4 of coffee made with a mocha and 2 and a half of American coffee.

1. You become more nervous
"Coffee is high in caffeine. This substance has a stimulating effect on the nervous system and when consumed in massive quantities, it promotes irritability," says nutritionist Maria Rosaria Baldi. "It blocks the production of adenosine, a molecule produced by the body that makes you feel relaxed and tired. At the same time, it is able to stimulate the synthesis of stress hormones, including adrenaline, causing irritability, nervousness, tachycardia, states of agitation and anxiety."

2. You may suffer from insomnia
"In some studies it has been seen that the intake of massive amounts of coffee can not only make it difficult to fall asleep, but lead to insomnia and therefore reduce the hours of rest due to the caffeine which, in addition to being present in this drink, is found in many others including cola and which is often abused unknowingly," says nutritionist Maria Rosaria Baldi. An abuse of caffeine also reduces the assimilation of calcium that is taken in with the consumption of milk, cheese, arugula, almonds and many other foods. "This mineral is valuable not only for the good health of bones and joints, but also for the sleep-wake rhythm."

3. You may have gastrointestinal problems
"Coffee has a laxative effect. It stimulates peristalsis and promotes the regularity of the intestines. This is always due to caffeine which, once it reaches the stomach, prompts the production of a peptide hormone called gastrin, which is essential for digestion," says the expert. "However, when you overdo it, you could have problems with stomach acid and intestinal disorders."

4. You feel more tired
Paradoxically, one of the immediate effects of drinking too much coffee is increased fatigue. Do you know the classic feeling of exhaustion that suddenly seizes you, often accompanied by headaches if you exaggerate with cups during a day? In fact, the energizing effect of coffee is only temporary and decreases as large quantities are consumed. Basically, the more you consume, the more the tonic effect is reduced, while the desire to drink it increases. "Coffee contains methylxanthines, stimulants that are able to affect the brain's production of neurotransmitters such as dopamine that fuel the desire to consume it," says nutritionist Maria Rosaria Baldi, who explains what happens if you drink too much coffee.
