Glenmorangie Scotch Whisky
Part of their core range, Quinta Ruban was originally aged for a minimum of 12 years and this expression was the first to increase to 14 years of aging. This Scotch is first aged for 10 years in a bourbon barrel and then finishes aging for 4 years in a port barrel. That’s where it gets its name! “Quinta” is the house producing port and “Ruban” means “Ruby” in Gaelic. Founded in the Scottish Highlands in 1843, Glenmorangie has always taken a creative approach to distilling, crafting its single malts in the tallest copper stills in Scotland to produce fruity, delicate flavours, then aging them in the finest casks sourced from around the world for distinctive character. The award-winning distiller’s innovative approach to whisky is evident in its newest offering: X by Glenmorangie, a richer, sweeter single malt created in partnership with mixologists for shaking up next-level cocktails.
Beyond the bottle, Glenmorangie’s innovative spirit has also made it an environmental leader. To minimize its impact on the planet, the distillery strives to produce as little waste as possible during the whisky-making process, has slashed carbon emissions by 30 per cent and is one of the first in Scotland to power its facilities with green energy. Now that’s worth toasting! The brand claims to have the tallest stills in Scotland. In the early ’90s interest in single malts took off in America, and has been growing rapidly since. Until, that is, in 2004, when it was bought by French luxury goods giant Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, presumably in order to add a high-class Scotch to its portfolio of wines and spirits, and everything changed. Or they sort of did.
LVMH ( Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) have been very clever in upgrading Glenmorangie’s image, and its presence on the world whisky stage, without in any way diminishing the product in the bottle. This is, of course, the whole object of the exercise, it’s what’s meant to happen but is harder than one might imagine. Just think of all those committees, and strategic planning sessions and Power Points involved in plotting the great, shiny future of the brand, and it’s all too easy to see how these grand schemes frequently turn to dust. Glenmorangie has always been successful in the UK, especially Scotland where it’s been the best-selling malt for decades, but it’s labored in wider markets. Glenmorangie is now the fourth most popular single malt Scotch in the world, surpassing 500,000 9L cases in 2015 for the first time, and increase of 60% since the takeover.
